As part of a department's safety arrangements, assessment of first aid needs should be carried out. This would identify the number of fully qualified first aider the department requires. The aim is to train individuals to deal safely and effectively with injuries and illnesses which happen at work.

Program Contents

  • Basic life support
  • Resuscitation
  • Dealing with accident and illness
  • Treatment of various casualty such as unconsciousness, shock, heart attack, chocking, bleeding, burns and scalds, poisoning, fractures
  • Using a First Aid kit
  • Simple record keeping
  • Practice skill

Objectives

By the end of the training, participants should be able to:

  • Demonstrate the assessment of a casualty and apply appropriate first aid treatment
  • Demonstrate competence in carrying out cardio pulmonary resuscitation
  • Obtain the First Aid at Work Certificate after passing the examination and assessment on the last day course

Program Methods

An intensive one to four day training consisting of instruction and practical training in first aid as required under the Health and Safety at Work Regulation. This HSE approved training course takes into account the "hazards" encountered at the workplace; covers a broad topic area with emphasis on how to give immediate treatment and to recognize when it is necessary to get medical aid.
